Basic Classroom Etiquette

Classroom Policy -Each lecturer has his/her own classroom policy. The classroom policy is usually included in the syllabus of each course and will be delivered in the class. As long as you choose to take one course, you automatically agree to follow the classroom policy of the course and will take any responsible for any possible result of violating the classroom policy. The school will not accept any complaints related to the issue of being punished according to the classroom policy.

If you disagree a certain classroom policy, you may discuss it with the instructor in the class when the syllabus is distributed. If you fail to reach a mutual understanding with the instructor, you may report to Academic Performance and Behavior Committee (APBC) through CIP administrative office in the first month of the semester. Otherwise, you will be consider to agree with the classroom policy. However, APBC can only play the role of the mediator. The mediating does not mean that the classroom policy will be changed.

Absence & Late of Student For your best learning experience and the requirement of Exit & Entry Bureau of China, attendance is compulsory for all classes for a full-time international student studying in China. Instructors will record attendance and report the student with poor performance to CIP administrative office. However, it is the instructor who determines the way of attendance taking. Usually, a late arrival or an early leaving of over 15 minutes is automatically considered as an absence for that class.

Attendance will be calculated into your final grades through different methods by the instructors. If the absence rate of certain course is over the maximum absence rate defined by the instructor, student may be deemed as failure by absent and an F will be showed on the transcript.

If you have to miss a class due to some unavoidable reasons such as illness or family emergency, please ask for permission from Academic Affairs Officer. The Officer will inform the instructors on your excused absence once your application has been approved. Related proof, such as doctor’s notes, may be required. It is your responsibility to contact your instructors to make up the classes you have missed or pick up the class materials. Getting approval for absence doesn’t mean that you are waived from assignment. The instructor has the right to decide the influence of your absence on your grade.

If you must be absent for more than 3 days, please apply for “Long-term Absence”. And once you are back to school, please report to Academic Affairs Officer in the first time, otherwise, we may consider that you are missing and will contact your emergency contactor or even report to the police.

Absence & Late Arrival of Lecturer - There may be occasions where the lecturer is absent on short notice or arrive late for class due to emergent reasons. Usually the teacher will inform student or CIP Admission Office in advance and arrange make up later. If such things happen, CIP administrative office will notice the students through email, WeChat, or notice outside/inside the classroom. If a lecturer does not arrive for 15 minutes without any notice, you must immediately inquire with CIP staff so that CIP staff will reach out to teacher in the first place.

Classroom Etiquette - Please show your respect to the instructors and your classmates, not disturbing the class order. Read the test book and related materials in advance, take the note in the classroom, actively participate in the classroom discussion and activities, and finish the assignments. Think critically when you are learning. If you have questions or disagree with teachers, please do not hesitate to raise your questions because your questions might be the questions of other students.

However, please remember that each instructor has set teaching goals for each class to meet the learning objectives of the subject and the instructor must take care of other students. If your questions or arguments takes too much time, it will influence the fulfilment of teaching goals and the learning effect of other students. In this case, if you do have questions unsolved and it may take a lot of class time, please talk to the instructor after class or during their office hours.
