Internship Visa Regulations

for International Students

An international student who is holding RP (study) is not allowed to working off-campus while studying unless practical internship(s) is required by the degree program. International student should and can get an internship visa (RP with internship remark), and only student with a valid internship visa can work off-campus legally.

Definition of Internship

Off-campus practical internships usually refers to activities practiced outside school according to the school’s curriculum. There are two types of practical internships for degree programs offered by Center of International Programs: Social Practice & Graduation Internship

  • Social Practice: Short-term intern for a company during summer or winter vocation to have some knowledge about the real business environment. Student can start Social Practice since 2nd year of study.

  • Graduation Internship: Student can only have graduation internship in his/her last year of study. student is required to complete a minimum of one-month full time internship in a company (or minimum 3 days per week and about 160 hours in total). This type of internship is to help student integrate knowledge they have learned and may help with the placement after graduation.

Eligibility for Internship Visa: Student will receive the Internship Visa only if following requirements have been met:

  1. Student is holding a RP (study), which is valid during the period of Internship.

  2. The type of internship meets the requirement of program curriculum

  3.  The internship is an unremunerative position with only reasonable amount of meal and transportation allowance.

  4. The internship position should be related to the student’s current major of study.

  5. The working time of should not be conflicting with the class schedule of the student

  6. The maximum length of the internship is 6 months

Illegal Employment:Student who is found to work illegally in China will be penalized and deported by Shanghai Exit & Entry Bureau (“SH E&E Bureau” for short) based on relevant laws and regulations. DHU will expel the student based on the request of SH E&E Bureau as well. A foreigner who is departed by the Visa Bureau will NOT be allowed to reenter China within 10 years. The company hiring foreigner without proper working visa or internship visa will also be penalized by SH E&E Bureau. Following behavior will also be considered as illegal working in China even the student is holding a valid internship visa.

  1. Student is working for more than one company in the same period.

  2. The actual company or position information is inconsistent with the information associated with the internship visa

Other Related Regulations:

  1. Student is required to pay CNY 400 to SH E&E Bureau for every internship visa application. It is the right of SH E&E Bureau to determine whether to issue the internship visa or not.

  2. The police have the right to verify a student’s identity by checking his/her passport and other relevant identity documents, such as student ID and Registration Form of Temporary Resident, anytime during the internship. Student is suggested to bring the passport and other relevant identity documents during the internship

  3. During the internship period, any information changes, such as change of passport or RP, change of school, change of internship company, or change of internship period, student is required to consult administrative office of ICES first. Student may be required resubmit the application with updated information and documents and apply for internship visa information updates or new internship visa.
